Haiku and I go way back... I was his high school art teacher, he is an amazing lyrical genius who I fortunately was able to work years after high school. I even designed one of his album covers. Check it out!

Tacoma's 100th Monkey 2012

Tacoma's 100th Monkey made a comeback after five years of being absent. The organizers invited me to reignite the tradition with a solo show in 2012. Here at Willow Eskridge's great stuido space downtown Tacoma, the show was a wonderful success and the 100th Monkey has been creating shows and inviting artists to participate annually ever since.

Shawn Foote was born in Tacoma, WA in 1974. At the age of four he moved with his family to start a cattle ranch in Southern Idaho. Angus cattle and baseball were at the core of Foote's early days. Shawn would eventually move back to Tacoma in 1999, when he was hired as a stock broker for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. With the highs and lows of the financial world, Foote found himself yearning to become an artist. He left the financial industry in 2005, moving to Pioneer Square, where he lived in his studio and created art. Foote's studio was in Seattle's historic 619 Western Building and was a regular stop during The Pioneer Square 1st Thursday Art Walk.

Now Foote's studio is in Tacoma, WA. He currently teaches art at an alternative high school in Spanaway. His body of work spans decades, inspired by nature, spirituality, current events and history. Foote's art often emerges out of a process, where ideas, experiments, and techniques culminate in pieces that gain a life of their own. Foote's work is grounded in material with resourcefulness and regular reflection being critical to the process. Curiosity, refined technique and patience allow his art to develop over time. In the end, art is a meditation and a means for self expression. It is a pathway to personal growth and transformation. Hense why Shawn likes to say, "My art is my alchemy."
